VA has not authorized BYU to handle advance payments. Therefore, you will receive your VA check on or after the first of the month following the month for which payment is due. This system is known as "post-payment." In other words, your responsibility is to attend class first, then VA will pay you for going to class.
If you are receiving Chapter 30 or Chapter 1606 education benefits, you can reduce from 4 to 7 days out of check delivery process by signing up for direct deposit. You will need to provide direct deposit data to the VA by calling 1-877-838-2778 or by visiting www.gibill.va.gov.
Some BYU degrees may extend the length of a student's program beyond what is normally required for graduation. You will need to complete an application form, available in our office, requesting specific approval from Utah's State Approving Agency for any program which leads to dual objectives.
A student may receive VA educational assistance benefits for pursuing courses through independent study. If you are enrolled at less than one-half time, VA will reimburse you for the tuition and fees upon completion of your BYU independent study course or courses. Please contact our office 801-422-2768 for additional information.
If you are repeating a course in order to raise your GPA to graduate, you will NOT receive VA benefits for this course. However, if you are repeating a course which you failed ("E" grade) or for which the grade you earned does not meet graduation requirements, i.e., ("C" grade required but you received a "D") then VA will pay for your repeating this course.
There are two possible situations for which VA will pay benefits:
Students, who are receiving Chapter 30 or Chapter 1606 education benefits, can certify their monthly Verification of Enrollment by calling the toll-free number 1-877-823-2378, or by using the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) site on or after the last day of each month.
Students may take courses that apply to their degree at more than one school. The school that will grant the degree is the student's "parent" school. All other schools are "secondary" schools. VA will pay benefits for courses taken at secondary schools. When parent and secondary school enrollment is "concurrent" (at the same time), VA will pay the combined credit, taking overlapping enrollment dates into account.
If you are having trouble with a course and need a tutor, you can qualify for tutorial assistance. It helps you pay for necessary tutoring and is a supplement to your regular education benefit. You must be attending school at the rate of one-half time or more, and BYU must certify that your tutor is qualified. Graduate students will need to submit proof of the need for tutoring.
You can receive up to $100 per month in tutorial assistance. The maximum allowance is $1,200 per year. After you have received $600 in tutorial assistance, VA will charge one month of entitlement for each payment equal to one month of full time benefits. This entitlement charge, however, does not apply for Chapter 35 recipients.
All VA tutorial forms are available in our office.
