To defer your BYU scholarship and admissions for an LDS mission, complete the Admission and Scholarship Deferment Application and return it to the Student Services, D-155 ASB. The balance of your scholarship will be available beginning the semester you return to BYU. If your scholarship is awarded as a percentage of tuition, its value will be increased in proportion to the cost of tuition. Deferred scholarships remain on the major fall and winter semesters unless you request otherwise.
For National Merit, department, or non-BYU scholarships contact the sponsoring organizations regarding their policies.
Please note that University Spring/Summer scholarships cannot be deferred. Other BYU scholarships will be deferred for the time you are actually serving your mission and may not be deferred for employment either before or after your mission.
Applying for scholarships while on a mission:
Since scholarship cutoffs generally go up, not down, we recommend that you apply for scholarships before you leave on your mission and then defer any awards you receive. We will automatically consider returning missionaries for academic scholarships for the semester or term that they return to school. If you want to be considered for other scholarships when you return (need-based, etc.), you will need to complete the enhanced or comprehensive application while you are on your mission.
