BYU Scholarship Policies

Terms and Conditions

1. You must abide by the Honor Code and adhere to the dress and grooming standards of BYU. The official letter of notification defines the periods and duration of your scholarship.

2. Most scholarships are awarded for two semesters. If your award is for fall and winter semesters, you may choose to use it in the following combinations within the same academic year:

• Fall and winter semesters.

• Fall semester, spring term, and summer term.

• Winter semester, spring term, and summer term.

Together, spring and summer terms equal one semester. If you choose to use your scholarship in a combination other than fall and winter semesters, you must contact the Scholarship Office. If you will not be attending fall or winter semester, contact the Admissions Office about deferment options.

3. You must register as a full-time, matriculated day school student and complete the minimum number of credit hours required by your scholarship.

• To claim a spring/summer scholarship, you must complete a minimum of 6 credit hours per term.

• To claim a fall/winter scholarship, you must complete a minimum of 14 credit hours per semester unless you contract in advance to do otherwise.

Once you have been notified of a scholarship, you may contract with the Scholarship Office to complete 28 credit hours during fall and winter semesters instead of 14 credit hours each semester. While you may not enroll in fewer than 12 credit hours during either semester, this option provides you increased flexibility in scheduling courses to suit your needs. For example, you may contract to take 15 credit hours fall semester and 13 credit hours during winter semester. Contract forms are available in the Scholarship Office.

• If you do not maintain the minimum credit hours required by your scholarship, the entire award will be canceled. You will then be responsible for all tuition charges and any late fees.

• Credits earned during spring and summer terms may not be used to make up shortfalls in the credit hour requirements associated with fall/winter scholarships.

• You may request a reduction in the minimum credit hour requirement during the last semester or terms prior to your graduation unless you are obligated by contract to take more. You must notify the Scholarship Office of your intentions. Your scholarship will then be prorated.

• Fall semester courses repeated during the subsequent winter semester will count only once toward the minimum hour requirement.

• Credit earned through Independent Study, audited classes, and special examination, including language exams, may not be used to meet the minimum hour requirement.

4. Your scholarship is intended to assist with educational expenses related to regular campus day school enrollment. However, you may use it toward tuition charges for the following:

• University-sponsored Travel Study and International Study Programs.

• University-approved academic internships for full-time credit.

• Dual enrollment in courses on the BYU Provo campus and at the Salt Lake Center as long as the total number of hours meets the minimum hour requirement associated with your award. For example, you may claim your scholarship by enrolling in 10 hours on the BYU Provo campus and 4 hours at the Salt Lake Center.

Note: You may not use your scholarship for the following:

• Independent Study or Continuing Education courses.

• Enrollment at other institutions, including BYU-Idaho, BYU-Hawaii, or LDS Institutes of Religion.

Reapplication

To be considered for scholarships for future enrollments, you must reapply each year by the continuing student scholarship deadlines. This is true even if the deadline falls within your first enrollment. The spring/summer continuing student deadline is January 15; the fall/winter continuing student deadline, April 15. Also, you must have an officially declared major by the scholarship deadline. To reapply for scholarships, complete the online application on the Route Y Interchange page by the appropriate deadline.

Provisions

1. The scholarship you have been awarded is only available to undergraduate students who are paying undergraduate tuition and have fewer than 160 credit hours, excluding Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate credit.

2. The Scholarship Office limits scholarship assistance to eight semesters per student. Spring and summer scholarships do not count against the eight semesters of eligibility. Consequently, after receiving eight semesters of fall/winter scholarship assistance, you may still be eligible to receive spring/summer awards.

Deferments

1. You may defer fall/winter scholarships to serve an LDS mission. To defer a scholarship and your admission to BYU, please complete the Admission and Scholarship Deferment Application, available in the Admissions Office, prior to leaving. The deferred balance of your scholarship will be made available beginning with the semester you return to BYU. If your scholarship is awarded as a percentage of tuition (e.g. half tuition), the value of your scholarship will be increased in proportion to the cost of tuition. Note: The scholarship will be deferred for the time you are actually serving your mission and may not be deferred for reasons of employment either before or after your mission.

2. Fall/winter scholarships may be deferred for extenuating circumstances other than LDS missions. To receive consideration for extenuating circumstances, please submit a petition to the Undergraduate Scholarship Committee.

3. Spring/summer scholarships may not be deferred.

Discontinuance

You claim a scholarship by registering for classes and using the scholarship to pay your tuition. If you then do not attend or, once enrolled, discontinue for non-emergency reasons, the scholarship will be canceled and you may be billed for the appropriate tuition and discontinuance fees. If you need to discontinue because of illness, injury, or extenuating circumstances, please contact the Scholarship Office as well as the Discontinuance Office for appropriate action.

Taxation

Under tax laws, funds awarded as scholarships, fellowships, benefits, and grants, are excluded from the recipient's gross income to the extent that they are used for required tuition, books, fees, supplies, and equipment. Funds that exceed these expenses or which are used for other purposes, including room, board, research, and travel, must be included as taxable income. Because you are responsible to pay any taxes due the government, you should keep receipts, cancelled checks, and other documents to detail your qualified expenditures, namely, required tuition, books, fees, supplies, and equipment. Since tax liability depends on each individual's circumstances, you should consult your personal tax advisor with any questions or concerns.

Exceptions

These policies are standard requirements for all scholarship recipients. Exceptions are sometimes granted based on individual needs and circumstances. In making decisions, the committee considers extenuating circumstances, which may include serious illness, injury, or disability; death or serious illness in one's immediate family; and extensive family responsibilities (such as those faced by a single parent with dependent children).

To request an exception, please submit a formal written petition to the Scholarship Office. Whenever possible, petitions for exceptions should be submitted prior to the necessary change.
