For Parents of Missionaries

BYU defers unused scholarships for LDS missionaries when students complete the Admission and Scholarship Deferment Application available through the Admissions Office.  The balance of the scholarship will be available when the student returns to BYU.  If the scholarship is awarded as a percentage of tuition, its value will be increased in proportion to the cost of tuition.  Deferred scholarships remain on the major fall and winter semesters unless the student requests otherwise.

Applying for scholarships while on a mission:
Since scholarship cutoffs generally go up, not down, we recommend that students apply for scholarships before their missions and then defer any awards.  We automatically consider returning missionaries for academic scholarships for the semester or term that they return to school--they do not need to complete an application.

If a missionary wants to be considered for other scholarships (such as need-based awards), he or she will need to complete the enhanced or comprehensive application by the appropriate deadline. This application is available on Route Y; you must have your son or daughter’s Route Y ID and password if you want to access this for them.  If you want to view the entire application, enter zeros in all fields and click “next” at the bottom of the page.  You can go back and edit the fields later.  You are welcome to enter demographic and financial information for your missionary, but your son or daughter must write the essays.

Registration:
For step-by-step help getting your missionary back in school, refer to Registration Help for Missionary Parents found on the Registration Office’s website.
