Question #1: Why would I not receive a scholarship from BYU when other
schools are recruiting me with offers? We appreciate the preparation and sterling qualifications of
our applicants, and we know most, if not all, would qualify for awards at other
colleges and universities. Unfortunately, the university is not in a financial
position to match award offers from other institutions. We award approximately a
third of our students, and the scholarships are based on the applicants'
qualifications relative to others within the population.
Question #2: If I didn't receive a scholarship this year, am I eligible
for future awards?
BYU scholarships are awarded on an annual basis. Not receiving
a scholarship in an academic year does not preclude you from receiving one in
the future. However, you must apply each year by the appropriate deadline to be
considered.
Question #3: If I didn't receive a fall/winter scholarship, can I reapply
just for a winter scholarship? The university does not award general scholarships for winter
semester only, except for new and former students admitted to BYU beginning in
winter semester. You may wish to contact your department to check on the
availability of departmental awards for winter semester only.
Question #4: Does my current award define or limit future scholarship
opportunities?Receiving a scholarship in an academic year neither advantages
nor disadvantages you for future consideration. BYU continuing student
scholarships are awarded on an annual basis, and you must qualify to receive
subsequent awards. Remember, you must apply each year by the appropriate
deadline to be considered.
Question #5: How will receiving a scholarship from a non-BYU agency
affect my eligibility for a BYU award?
When making academic scholarship decisions, the
university does not consider financial aid from outside sources. However, for
need-based awards, the university evaluates each applicant's financial
situation, including assistance from other scholarship sources.
Question #6: May I receive more than one BYU scholarship at a time?
Because scholarship funds are limited, the university prefers
to award as many students as possible rather than award a few students many
scholarships. Although students rarely receive more than one scholarship, you
are welcome to pursue additional scholarship opportunities through your
department and college.
Question #7: Are there scholarships for part-time students?
Generally, only full-time students are eligible for
scholarships. However, if you receive a scholarship for your last semester or
terms before graduation, you may contract with the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office to claim
your award with a reduced enrollment.
Question #8: Must I declare a major to be eligible for future
scholarships?
Because cutoffs are determined by college, you must declare a
major by the end of your sophomore year to be considered for continuing student
scholarships.
