Question #1: Where will I find a list of the requirements governing my
acceptance of a BYU scholarship?A policy sheet specific to your award should have accompanied
your scholarship notification letter. For your convenience, the policies for the following scholarships are
also available online at the locations listed below or you may request a copy from the Scholarship Office,
A-41 ASB. We strongly recommend you review the policies regularly to ensure
compliance.
MonsonBYU National MeritHeritageOther AcademicQuestion #2: What will happen if I do not meet the requirements of my
scholarship?
If you do not meet the requirements of your scholarship, you
will forfeit the current semester of your award and jeopardize continued or
future eligibility.
Question #3: What will happen if I go on academic warning or probation as
a result of my grades for a semester or term?If you are placed on academic warning or probation, you will
receive your current university scholarship as long as you meet the other
requirements of your award. However, academic warning or probation will be taken
into consideration when you apply for future scholarships.
Question #4: Will credit received by examination or language credit
purchased in conjunction with a completed BYU course count toward the minimum
hour requirement for BYU scholarships?
Although we encourage you to take special course evaluations
for which you are prepared, only those courses in which you actually enroll and
complete will count toward the hour requirements. Scholarship recipients must
enroll and complete a minimum of 14 credit hours per semester and 6 per
term.
Question #5: May I take fewer credit hours if I'm working? While we recognize the financial pressures of many students,
we generally do not consider student employment sufficient to make an exception
to established policy. Interestingly, several studies suggest part-time
employment generally does not adversely affect students' grades.
Question #6: With the way my schedule works out, I will need to take more
than the minimum credit hours during fall semester. Can I enroll in fewer
credits hours during winter semester? To claim a fall/winter scholarship, you must complete a
minimum of 14 credit hours per semester unless you contract in advance to
do otherwise. To provide you a measure of flexibility in scheduling courses and
meeting other obligations, we allow you to contract with the Scholarship Office
to complete 28 credit hours during fall and winter semesters instead of 14
credit hours each semester. However, you may not enroll in fewer than 12 credit
hours during either semester. Contract forms are available at Student Services, D-155 ASB or access the online
contract form.
Question #7: If I repeat a course during the winter semester that I
originally took during the previous fall semester, will it count toward the hour
requirement both semesters?
If you repeat a course within the same academic year, it will
only count once toward the hour requirement. However, credit hours repeated over
different academic years will count both times.
Question #8: Am I required to pay back my scholarship sometime in the
future?Although there is no legal obligation to repay a scholarship,
the university encourages all students who have benefitted from the generosity
of others to make a similar investment when they are in a financial position to
do so. The university endorses the concept of replenishment for those who attend
BYU and receive financial support.
Question #9: How long may students receive scholarship assistance? You may receive a maximum of eight semesters of scholarship
assistance, not including spring and summer awards, as long as you are an
undergraduate student paying undergraduate tuition and have earned fewer than
160 hours of credit, excluding AP and IP credit.
Question #10: May I use my scholarship all at once rather than having it
divided equally between two semesters?
Although your scholarship may have been awarded for two
semesters, you may use only one semester at a time. For example, two semesters
of a half-tuition scholarship may not be combined into full tuition for one
semester.
Question #11: If I don't use all of my scholarship during the year for
which it was awarded, may I use the remainder the following year?If you do not use your scholarship in the academic year
specified in your award letter, you forfeit the balance and must reapply for the
following year's consideration, unless it is appropriately deferred for a
mission or other approved purpose.
Question #12: May I use my scholarship during fall semester and
spring/summer terms rather than during fall and winter? If your scholarship is for more than one semester, you may use it during any of
the following combinations during the same academic year: fall and winter, fall
and spring/summer, or winter and spring/summer. However, if you choose to use
your scholarship during any combination other than fall/winter, you will need to
submit a Continuing Student Admission and Scholarship Deferment
Application to the D-155 ASB.
Question #13: May I apply my scholarship for Study Abroad and Travel Study
programs?
The Scholarship Office allows students to apply the
scholarships it awards to the tuition costs of Study Abroad and certain Travel
Study programs. However, if your scholarship was awarded by another campus
department, you must receive permission from that granting office to use your
scholarship for these programs.
Question #14: May I use my scholarship for BYU Evening School? If your schedule requires taking evening classes along with
regular day classes, you may use your scholarship for payment of your regular
fees. However, if you are a full-time evening student and are not taking day
classes, you are not eligible to use your scholarship. You may wish to inquire
of BYU Evening School regarding its scholarship programs.
Question #15: May I use my scholarship at BYU-Hawaii or BYU-Idaho?BYU scholarships may not be used at BYU-Hawaii or BYU-Idaho.
Question #16: May I use my scholarship at the Salt Lake Center? If you have been admitted to BYU as a regular day school
student, you may claim your scholarship while enrolling in courses on one or
both campuses as long as the total number of hours meets the minimum hour
requirement associated with your award. For example, if you have been awarded a
half tuition scholarship, you may claim it by enrolling in 10 hours on the BYU
campus and 4 hours at the Salt Lake Center.
