Question #1: What GPA must I maintain to retain my multi-year
scholarship? You must maintain a cumulative BYU GPA of at least 3.60
through winter semester of each academic year in order to retain your
scholarship eligibility. An incomplete grade may jeopardize your eligibility
since it is calculated into your GPA as a failing grade after four months until
it is completed. Of course, you must also complete the appropriate number of
credit hours. If you have a Gordon B. Hinckley Presidential Scholarship or a
Heritage Scholarship and fail to meet the requirements at the end of winter
semester of each academic year, the remainder of the scholarship may be
withdrawn. If you have a National Merit Scholarship, the stipend for the
remaining semesters may be reduced to the National Merit minimum (normally $375
per semester).
Question #2: How will my compliance with multi-year scholarship
requirements be determined?Following each winter semester, the Undergraduate Scholarship
Committee will review your performance against the requirements associated with
your scholarship. If there are extenuating circumstances that adversely affected
your performance, we invite you to submit a written explanation to the
Financial Aid and Scholarship Office. After considering these and other factors, the committee
will determine your eligibility for the remaining semesters of your
scholarship.
Question #3: May I use my scholarship during fall semester and
spring/summer terms rather than during fall and winter? You may use your scholarship during any of the following
combinations during the same academic year: fall and winter, fall and
spring/summer, or winter and spring/summer. However, if you choose to use your
scholarship during any combination other than fall/winter, you will need to
submit a Continuing Student Admission and Scholarship Deferment
Application to Student Services, D-150 ASB.
If you plan to attend spring and/or summer terms in addition to fall
and winter semesters, we invite you to apply for a continuing student
spring/summer award by the January 15 deadline. These awards are based on
applicants’ BYU and total grade point averages. If awarded, you will be able to
conserve your multi-year scholarship for other fall and winter semesters, which
may be important if you will be attending BYU for more than eight semesters.
Again, this option is available to students interested in attending spring
and/or summer terms in addition to fall and winter semesters.
Remember, you must enroll in and use your multi-year scholarship for a
minimum of two semesters of each academic year.
Question #4: Who funds my BYU-sponsored National Merit Scholarship?National Merit Scholarship Corporation and other corporate
partners award a number of scholarships that carry the National Merit
designation. However, BYU-sponsored National Merit Scholarships are funded
entirely by the university. As participants in the National Merit
Scholarship program, we agree to abide by certain rules and procedures, but the
funding is entirely ours. To carry the label, awards we sponsor must be valued
at least $750-2000, depending on the recipients' financial need. At BYU, not
only do we comply with the minimum amount, we exceed it by increasing the amount
of the award to full LDS tuition.
