Frequently Asked Questions - LDS Missions

Question #1: How do I defer my BYU Scholarship for an LDS mission?
Complete the deferment form and returrn it to the Admissions Office, A-153 ASB, Provo, UT 84602. For National Merit, department, or off-campus scholarships, contact the sponsoring organization for their policies.

Question #2: Is there something I should do before leaving on my mission to ensure scholarship consideration upon my return?
To avoid unnecessary distractions while you are serving, we recommend you complete the online scholarship application during your first year at BYU prior to your mission departure. If you are then awarded a scholarship, you can simply defer it after receiving your official mission call by submitting the Admission and Scholarship Deferment Application, available from the Admissions Office, A-153 ASB.

Question #3: If I return from my mission beginning winter semester and my deferred two semester scholarship will cover that semester and the next fall semester, how can I be considered for a new scholarship for the following winter semester?
You must reapply by the April 15 scholarship deadline for fall/winter scholarships. Consideration of your application will take into account any existing scholarships, and you will be considered for a new scholarship for the following winter semester. For example, if you return to school from your mission in Winter Semester 2007 and you have a previously deferred scholarship which covers Winter Semester 2007 and Fall Semester 2007, you will need to apply shortly after returning to school for a Fall 2007/Winter 2008 continuing student scholarship by April 15, 2007. It will be noted that you already have a scholarship for Fall Semester 2007, and you will be considered for a new scholarship for Winter 2008. In fact, if you qualify for a greater scholarship than the one deferred, your fall semester stipend will be increased.

Question #4: Will my scholarship be automatically deferred when I go on an LDS mission?
To reserve any unused portion of your fall/winter scholarship during the period of your missionary service, you must apply for deferment by submitting an Admission and Scholarship Deferment Application to the Admissions Office after receiving your official mission call and before leaving on your mission. This application will enable you to defer both your admission and scholarship until you return from your mission. If you fail to apply for deferment, you will lose the balance of your scholarship. Spring and summer scholarships may not be deferred.

Question #5: When will the university allow me to defer a scholarship?
You may defer university fall/winter scholarships to serve an LDS mission or for other unusual circumstances approved by the Undergraduate Scholarship Committee. To defer a scholarship for a full-time mission, complete the Admission and Scholarship Deferment Application, available from the Admissions Office, A-153 ASB. To receive deferment consideration for reasons other than a mission, you must submit a petition to the Committee. Petition forms are available at the Scholarship Office, A-41 ASB or you can e-mail your petition to sch-petitions@byu.edu. Spring/summer scholarships may not be deferred.
